عَنْ أبي عَمْرٍو، وقيل أبي عَمْرَة سُفْيَانَ بنِ عبدِ اللّهِ رضي اللّهُ عنه قالَ: قُلْتُ: يا رسولَ اللّه، قُلْ لِي في الإِسلامِ قَولًا لا أَسْأَلُ عنْهُ أَحدًا غَيْرَكَ. قالَ: «قُلْ: آمَنْتُ باللّهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ» رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abu 'Amr — and it is also said Abu 'Amrah — Sufyan ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me something about Islam that I need not ask anyone else about after you." He said: "Say: 'I believe in Allah,' and then remain steadfast." Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
قولًا لا أسأل عنه أحدًا غيرك: أي قولًا لا أحتاج إلى أحد بعدك يفسره لي، فأعمل بما تقول، وأكتفي به. استقم: أي على شرعه؛ بِالْتِزَام عَمَل الطاعَات والانتِهَاء عن المخالفَات.
"Tell me something I need not ask anyone else about after you": Meaning a statement so comprehensive that I would not need anyone after you to explain it to me, so that I may act upon your words and be satisfied with them. "Remain steadfast" (istaqim): That is, upon His law — by adhering to acts of obedience and abstaining from violations.

الحديث من جوامع كلمه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم، وهو مطابق لقوله تعالى: {إن الذين قالوا ربّنا اللّه ثم استقاموا}. الاستقامة هي التزام منهج الإسلام، قال عمر بن الخطاب رضي اللّه عنه: الاستقامة أن تقوم على الأمر والنهي ولا تروغ عنه رَوغَان الثعلب. دعوى الإيمان لا تكفي ما لم يدلَّ عليه العمل، فإنَّه ترجمة له وثمرة من ثمراته. الاستقامة درجة عالية تدل على كمال الإيمان وعلوِّ الهمَّة.
This hadith is among the comprehensive sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and it corresponds to the saying of Allah the Most High: {Indeed, those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remain steadfast...}. Steadfastness means adhering to the path of Islam. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Steadfastness is to uphold the commands and prohibitions and not to dodge them like a fox. A mere claim of faith is insufficient unless it is proven by righteous deeds, for deeds are the expression and fruit of faith. Steadfastness is a lofty station that indicates complete faith and high aspiration.
