On the authority of Abu Sirwa'ah — with the sin either voweled with a kasrah or a fathah — 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I prayed the 'Asr prayer behind the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Madinah. After he gave the salutation, he stood up hastily, stepping over the people's shoulders to reach one of the rooms of his wives. The people were alarmed by his haste. When he came out to them and saw that they were surprised by his speed, he said: "I remembered some gold that was with us, and I disliked that it should preoccupy me, so I ordered it to be distributed." In another narration by al-Bukhari: "I had left behind in the house some gold from the charity, and I disliked keeping it overnight." Narrated by al-Bukhari.
"Stepped over the people's shoulders": He passed through the rows while the people were seated. "Rooms" (hujar): Plural of hujrah, meaning a dwelling. "The people were alarmed": They became apprehensive because this was contrary to his usual manner, as it was his habit (peace be upon him) to walk at a moderate pace. "Gold" (tibr): Pieces of gold or silver; some say it refers specifically to gold. "Preoccupy me" (yahbisani): Meaning that thinking about it would distract me from turning to and focusing on Allah. Others understood it to mean that delaying charity detains its owner on the Day of Resurrection.
