On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, which charity brings the greatest reward?" He said: "That you give charity while you are healthy and covetous, fearing poverty and hoping for wealth. Do not delay until the soul reaches the throat and then you say: 'Give such-and-such to so-and-so, and such-and-such to so-and-so' — when it has already become the property of so-and-so." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
"Give charity" (tasaddaq): Originally tatasaddaq. "Covetousness" (shuhh): Miserliness; it is also said to mean miserliness combined with greed, or that stinginess is an inherent trait of the person. "Fearing" (takhsha): Being afraid. "Hoping" (ta'mul): Aspiring. "Throat" (hulqum): The windpipe. "Reaches the throat": When the soul approaches the throat, which is among the signs of death. "You say: 'Give such-and-such to so-and-so'": Some say this refers to acknowledging debts, others say it refers to bequests, and others say it refers to the heir. "It has already become the property of so-and-so": It has already passed to the beneficiary of the bequest, or to the heir for whatever exceeds one-third. The heir thereafter has the option to ratify or invalidate it.

Charity given in a state of health is better than charity given during illness, because miserliness is predominant in a person during health. If he gives generously and donates despite that, it demonstrates the sincerity of his intention and the greatness of his love for Allah the Most High. This is in contrast to one who has despaired of recovery and sees his wealth passing to others — his charity at that point is diminished in reward. Encouragement to hasten toward good deeds and giving charity before the onset of the signs of death.
