عن أنسٍ رضي اللّهُ عنه، أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أَخذَ سيْفًا يومَ أُحدٍ فقَالَ: «مَنْ يأْخُذُ منِّي هَذا؟» فبَسطُوا أَيدِيَهُم، كُلُّ إنْسانٍ منهُمْ يقُولُ: أَنا أَنا، قَالَ: «فمَنْ يأَخُذُهُ بحَقِّه؟» فَأَحْجَمَ الْقَومُ، فقالَ أَبُو دُجَانَةَ رضيَ اللّهُ عنه: أَنا آخُذُهُ بحقِّهِ، فأَخَذَهُ ففَلَقَ بِهِ هَامَ الْمُشْرِكينَ». رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took hold of a sword on the Day of Uhud and said: "Who will take this from me?" They stretched out their hands, each one saying: "I will! I will!" He said: "Who will take it with its due right?" The people held back. Then Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will take it with its due right." So he took it and split the skulls of the polytheists with it. Narrated by Muslim.

اسم أبي دجانة: سِمَاكُ بْنُ خَرْشَةَ. يأخذه بحقِّه: أي يقاوم به أعداء اللّه، ويجاهد به حقّ الجهاد. أَحجم الْقوم: أي توقَّفُوا. فَلق بِهِ: أَي شَقَّ به. هام الْمشرِكين: أَيْ رؤوسهُمْ.
Abu Dujanah's name was Simak ibn Kharshah. "Take it with its due right": Meaning to fight the enemies of Allah with it and wage jihad as it truly deserves. "The people held back" (ahjam al-qawm): They hesitated. "Split" (falaqa): Meaning he cleaved. "Skulls of the polytheists" (ham al-mushrikin): Their heads.

يدلّ الحديث على شجاعة أبي دجانة وتضحيته وصدقه في الجهاد، ولا يدل على جبن الصحابة رضي اللّهُ عنهم، وإنّما هم أحجموا عن أخذ السيف خوفًا منهم أن لا يستطيعوا الوفاء بشرطه وحقِّه، وإنَّمَا مدّوا أيديهم ليأخذوه أولًا ليقاتلوا به وفق استطاعتهم من غير شرط. ترغيب الرسول صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم أصحابه في مزيد من التضحية في سبيل اللّه. مَن تولّى مهمة فعليه أن يؤديها بحقٍّ وصدقٍ .
This hadith demonstrates the courage, sacrifice, and sincerity of Abu Dujanah in fighting for the cause of Allah. It does not indicate cowardice on the part of the other Companions (may Allah be pleased with them); rather, they held back from taking the sword out of concern that they would not be able to fulfill its condition and right. They had initially extended their hands to take it and fight with it according to their ability without any stipulation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged his Companions toward greater sacrifice in the cause of Allah. Whoever undertakes a responsibility must fulfill it with sincerity and integrity.
