Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Hasten to perform good deeds before seven things: Are you waiting for anything but debilitating poverty, or wealth that leads to transgression, or an illness that corrupts, or senility that enfeebles the mind, or sudden death, or the Dajjal — and he is the worst absent thing awaited — or the Hour, for the Hour is the most calamitous and most bitter." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi who said: It is a hasan hadith.

"Debilitating poverty" (faqran munsiyan): Poverty that causes its owner to forget acts of obedience due to being preoccupied with seeking sustenance. "Wealth that leads to transgression" (ghinan mutghiyan): Wealth that drives its owner to exceed limits in sinfulness. "Illness that corrupts" (maradan mufsidan): That corrupts the mind or the body. "Senility that enfeebles the mind" (haraman mufnidan): Al-fanad originally means falsehood, and here it refers to speech that deviates from soundness. "Sudden death" (mawtan mujhizan): Swift death, such as dying suddenly. "The Dajjal": A disbelieving, wicked person who will appear near the Day of Judgment, calling to disbelief. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge from him and warn against him. "The Hour": The Day of Judgment. "Most calamitous" (adha): Greater in affliction. "Most bitter" (amarr): More severe in bitterness than the torments and horrors of this world.

Information about the Dajjal, who is among the signs of the Hour. The torment of this world is lighter than the torment of the Hereafter. A person should hasten to perform righteous deeds before impediments draw near. Among the most significant distractions that keep a person from doing good are poverty, wealth, illness, and old age. The believer should take advantage of occasions when opportunities for good deeds present themselves, for they do not last forever — like a merchant who seizes the right seasons to gain great profit.
