عن أَنسٍ رضي اللّهُ عنه عن النبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ فيمَا يرْوِيِهِ عنْ ربِهِ عزَّ وجَلَّ قالَ: «إِذَا تَقَرَّبَ الْعَبْدُ إِلَيَّ شِبْرًا تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ ذِراعًا، وإِذَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ ذِراعًا تَقَرَّبْتُ منهُ بَاعًا، وإِذَا أَتَانِي يَمْشِي أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْوَلَة» رواه البخاري.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him), in what he narrates from his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, who said: "When My servant draws near to Me by a hand's span, I draw near to him by a cubit. When he draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by a fathom. And when he comes to Me walking, I come to him running." Narrated by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
فيما يرويه عن ربه: هذا حديث قدسي. إذا تقرب العبد: أي بالذكر والعمل الصالح. تقربت اليه: أوصلت رحمتي إليه. باعًا: الباع هو قدر مدِّ اليدين وما بينهما من البدن. هرولة: نوع من المشي فيه مسارعة الخطا.
"In what he narrates from his Lord": This is a hadith qudsi (sacred hadith). "When My servant draws near": Through remembrance of Allah and righteous deeds. "I draw near to him": I bring My mercy to him. "A fathom" (ba'an): The span of outstretched arms and the body between them. "Running" (harwalah): A type of walking with quickened steps.

التقرب أو القرب والدُّنوّ: من صفات اللّه ثابتة لـه بالكتاب والسنة، و(القريب) اسم من أسمائه تعالى. الهرولة هنا كناية عن سُرعة الإجابة، وقبول التَّوبة. الدلالة على كرم أكرم الأكرمين؛ فهو يعطي الجزيل في مقابل القليل.
Drawing near, closeness, and proximity are among the attributes of Allah established in the Quran and Sunnah, and "the Near One" (al-Qarib) is one of His names, the Most High. The running here is a metaphor for the swiftness of response and the acceptance of repentance. An indication of the generosity of the Most Generous; He gives abundantly in return for little.
