عن عائشةَ رضي اللّهُ عنها أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم كَان يقُومُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ حتَّى تتَفطَّرَ قَدمَاهُ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ، لمَ تصنعُ هذا يا رسولَ اللّهِ، وقدْ غفَرَ اللّه لَكَ مَا تقدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنبِكَ وما تأخَّرَ؟! قال: «أَفَلا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أكُونَ عبْدًا شكُورًا؟» متفقٌ عليه.
On the authority of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to stand in night prayer until his feet would crack. I said to him: "Why do you do this, O Messenger of Allah, when Allah has forgiven you your past and future sins?" He said: "Should I not love to be a grateful servant?" Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

يجب أن تكون النعمة سببًا لزيادة الشكر، وفعل ما يجب من الطاعات وترك المعصية. الأنبياء معصومون من الكبائر بالإجماع، ومن الصغائر التي فيها رذائل. على المسلم أن يأتي بالنوافل قدر ما يستطيع، لا يكلف اللّه نفسًا إلّا وسعها بيان فضل قيام اللّيل وما له من القدر العظيم في نفس النبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم، بل كان يحرص عليه في آخر حياته مع تعبه. لا يكون الشكر باللسان فقط بل يكون بالجوارح والأركان، وهو من أسباب كسب المؤمن رضا اللّه تبارك وتعالى. بيان فضل زوجات النبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم إذ نقل لنا ما كان يخفى علينا من حاله صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم.
Blessings should be a cause for increasing gratitude, performing the obligatory acts of worship, and abandoning sin. The Prophets are protected by consensus from major sins and from minor sins that involve moral baseness. A Muslim should perform voluntary acts of worship to the extent of his ability — Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. This hadith demonstrates the great virtue of the night prayer and its immense value in the eyes of the Prophet (peace be upon him); he was keen on performing it even in the latter part of his life despite his fatigue. Gratitude is not expressed by the tongue alone but also through the limbs and body, and it is among the means by which the believer earns the pleasure of Allah the Blessed and Most High. This hadith highlights the virtue of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him), as they transmitted to us what was hidden from us of his private devotion (peace be upon him).
