On the authority of Abu 'Abdullah, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) one night. He began reciting Surah al-Baqarah. I thought he would bow at the hundredth verse, but he continued. I thought he would complete it in one unit of prayer, but he continued. I thought he would bow after completing it, but then he began Surah al-Nisa' and recited it, then began Surah Al 'Imran and recited it. He recited at a measured, unhurried pace. Whenever he passed a verse of glorification, he would glorify Allah. Whenever he passed a verse of supplication, he would supplicate. Whenever he passed a verse seeking refuge, he would seek refuge. Then he bowed, saying: "Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty." His bowing was approximately as long as his standing. Then he said: "Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise." Then he stood for a long time, nearly as long as his bowing. Then he prostrated, saying: "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High," and his prostration was nearly as long as his standing. Narrated by Muslim.

It is permissible to follow an imam in voluntary prayer. It is permissible to establish a congregation for the night prayer, though this should be done occasionally outside of Ramadan. As for Ramadan, it is from the Sunnah for people to pray in congregation. The recommendation of lengthening the night prayer. "I thought he would complete it in one unit of prayer" means: I thought he would conclude the prayer with it by dividing it into two units. By "one unit" he meant the complete prayer consisting of two rak'ahs. It is permissible to recite surahs out of their order in the Quran, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed Surah al-Nisa' before Surah Al 'Imran, whereas the standard arrangement places Al 'Imran before al-Nisa'. It is recommended during the night prayer, when one passes a verse of mercy, to pause and ask Allah, such as pausing at the mention of Paradise and saying: "O Allah, make me among its people. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise." When passing a verse of warning, one should pause and say: "I seek refuge in Allah from that. I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire." When passing a verse of glorification — meaning the exaltation of Allah — one should pause and glorify and exalt Him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would glorify Allah and repeat the glorification, as Hudhayfah reported that he would say "Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty" and would prolong it, and "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High" and prolong it, mentioning nothing else. This indicates that repeating the glorification in bowing and prostrating, however many times, is a sunnah. Bowing was specified with glorifying the "Almighty" and prostration with the "Most High" because "the Most High" is more emphatic in glorification, being a superlative, and prostration is the most humble position since the face is placed on the ground — thus the most emphatic expression was paired with the most humble posture. His standing for a long time after rising from bowing, then prostrating, provides evidence for the permissibility of lengthening the standing after bowing.
