On the authority of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) one night, and he prolonged the standing until I considered doing something bad. When asked: "What did you consider?" He said: "I considered sitting down and leaving him." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
"I prayed": Meaning the tahajjud prayer. "I considered" (hamamtu): Al-hamm is the resolve to do something. "What did you consider?": This reflects the propriety of asking about ambiguous speech.

This hadith provides evidence that it is from the Sunnah to stand in the night prayer and prolong the standing. Know that if you prolong the standing, then the Sunnah is to also prolong the bowing, prostration, sitting between the two prostrations, and standing after bowing. It is from the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace be upon him) that he would make his prayer proportionate — if he lengthened the standing, he lengthened the remaining pillars; if he shortened the standing, he shortened the remaining pillars. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) called his thought of sitting down behind the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the night prayer "something bad." This reflects his refined etiquette with the Prophet (peace be upon him). One should observe proper etiquette with imams and elders, and not contradict them in word or deed unless it involves something forbidden. The scholars have agreed that if standing becomes burdensome for someone following an imam in an obligatory or voluntary prayer and he is unable to continue, it is permissible for him to sit down. Ibn Mas'ud refrained from sitting out of proper etiquette.
