ليس بين الإنسان والجنة والنار إلّا أن يموت على فعلِ ما يستوجب أحدهما. الحديث يتضمن ترغيبًا وترهيبًا. ينبغي للمرء أن لا يزهد في قليلٍ من الخيرِ أن يأتيه ولا في قليلٍ من الشر أن يجتنبه٬ فإنّه لا يعلم الحسنة التي يرحمه اللّه بها ولا السيئة التي يسخط عليه بها. الأصل فيما أراد اللّه من الكرامةِ للإنسان أن يسكن الجنّة، ولكن بالعصيان يَخرج منها، فمن أطاع اللّه في الدنيا عاد إلى منزله الأصيل وهو الجنّة، ومن عصى اللّه رُدَّ إلى النار. طريق الجنّـة يســير، توبة مما مضــى، وعمــل صالح، وترك للمعاصي فيما بقي. مخالفة الهوى طريق إلى الجنّة، وموافقة الهوى في المعاصي يفضي إلى النار.

There is nothing between a person and either Paradise or the Fire except dying while doing what merits one of them. This hadith contains both encouragement and warning. A person should not disdain even a small good deed nor think a small sin is insignificant, for he does not know which good deed will earn him Allah's mercy or which sin will bring about His displeasure. The original honor that Allah intended for the human being was to dwell in Paradise, but through disobedience one departs from it. Whoever obeys Allah in this world returns to his original abode — Paradise — and whoever disobeys Allah is consigned to the Fire. The path to Paradise is easy: repentance from the past, righteous deeds, and abandoning sins in what remains. Opposing one's base desires is the path to Paradise, and yielding to base desires in sinful matters leads to the Fire.
