Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever a person in need came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he would turn to those sitting with him and say: "Intercede and you will be rewarded. Allah will decree through the tongue of His Prophet what He loves." Agreed upon. In another narration: "what He wills."
"Intercession" (al-shafa'ah): mediating for the sake of Allah the Most High to bring benefit to people or to ward off harm from them, in matters that do not involve disobedience to Allah nor in cases where a prescribed punishment (hadd) has already reached the ruler. "Allah will decree through the tongue of His Prophet what He loves": the intended meaning is that the reward for your intercession is established whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) accepts it or another course appears better to him — so do not hesitate in offering intercession.
The encouragement of intercession and its recommendation for those with permissible needs, as it carries reward whether the need is fulfilled or not. The one who strives to fulfill others' needs is rewarded in all cases, even if his efforts do not succeed. Excluded from the general scope of this hadith (based on other narrations) is intercession regarding the prescribed punishments (hudud) of Allah when the matter warranting the punishment has already reached the ruler — intercession is not permissible in such cases and carries no reward.
