Riyad Al Salihin

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or is oppressed." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I can support him if he is oppressed, but how do I support him if he is the oppressor?" He said: "You restrain him — or prevent him — from injustice, for that is his support." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

"You restrain him" (tahjuzuhu): meaning you prevent him and make yourself a barrier against his wrongdoing.

The obligation of cooperation in righteousness and piety in all circumstances, for true brotherhood in Allah is founded upon mutual sincere advice. The prohibition of injustice and the encouragement to support the oppressed. Supporting the oppressor is achieved by restraining him from his injustice, for the oppressor is in fact wronging his own self.
