Riyad Al Salihin

Abu 'Umarah al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us with seven things and prohibited us from seven: He commanded us to visit the sick, follow funeral processions, say 'yarhamuk Allah' to the one who sneezes, fulfill oaths, support the oppressed, accept invitations, and spread the greeting of peace. And he prohibited us from gold rings or wearing gold rings, drinking from silver vessels, red silk cushions (mayathir), al-qassi garments, and wearing silk, brocade (istabraq), and damask (dibaj). Agreed upon. In another narration: "and announcing lost items" was included among the first seven commands.

"Fulfilling oaths" (ibrar al-muqsim): meaning complying with the oath of one who swears upon you to do what he has asked. "Mayathir" (al-mayathir): plural of maytharah, which is something made of silk and stuffed with cotton or other material for a rider to sit upon. "Al-qassi" (al-qassiyy): garments woven from a blend of silk and linen. "Brocade" (al-istabraq): thick silk; the thin type is called sundus. "Damask" (al-dibaj): garments made entirely of silk. "Announcing lost items" (inshad al-dallah): meaning publicly announcing lost property and describing it so that its owner can claim it — this is a virtuous act that is commanded, except inside the mosque.

Supporting the oppressed is an obligation upon whoever is capable of it, and this is achieved by restoring his right and retrieving it from his oppressor. Fulfilling oaths applies only to what is permissible of lawful matters and noble character; if what is sworn upon is forbidden, one should not fulfill the oath. The prohibition of using silver vessels, and the prohibition of gold vessels is even more emphatic. The prohibition of wearing gold rings and silk in all its forms applies to men, not to women.
