عن ابْن مسْعُودٍ رضي اللّهُ عنه قَالَ: دَخلْتُ عَلى النَّبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وَهُو يُوعَكُ فَقُلْتُ: يا رسُولَ اللّهِ إِنَّكَ تُوعكُ وَعْكًا شَدِيدًا قال: «أَجَلْ إِنِّي أُوعَكُ كَمَا يُوعَكُ رَجُلانِ مِنْكُم» قُلْتُ: ذلك أَنَّ لَكَ أَجْرَيْن؟ قال: «أَجَلْ ذَلك كَذلِك، مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُصِيبُهُ أَذًى، شوْكَةٌ فَمَا فوْقَهَا إلاَّ كَفَّر اللّهُ بهَا سيّئاتِه، وَحُطَّتْ عنْهُ ذُنُوبُهُ كَمَا تَحُطُّ الشَّجرَةُ وَرقَهَا» متفقٌ عليه.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I visited the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was suffering from a fever. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, you are suffering from a severe fever." He said: "Yes, I suffer fever equivalent to that of two men among you." I said: "Is that because you will have a double reward?" He said: "Yes, it is so. No Muslim is afflicted with any harm — even the prick of a thorn or more — except that Allah expiates his sins thereby, and his sins fall away from him as leaves fall from a tree." Agreed upon.

أنّ المرض إذا اشتدّ تضاعف الأجر إلى أن تُحطّ السيّئات كلّها. أشدّ الناس بلاء الأنبياء؛ لأنّهم مخصوصون بكمال الصبر وصحّة الاحتساب، ولأن اللّه تعالى جعلَ منهم قدوةً للناس.
When illness intensifies, the reward multiplies until all sins are shed. The most severely tested of people are the prophets, because they are distinguished by perfect patience and sincere seeking of reward, and because Allah the Most High made them role models for mankind.
