Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "None of you should wish for death because of a harm that has befallen him. If he must do so, then let him say: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take my life if death is better for me.'" Agreed upon.

Entrusting and submitting to Allah the Most High the choice between life and death. It is disliked to wish for death when calamities befall. There is no dislike in wishing for death out of longing for Allah, or seeking martyrdom in the way of Allah, or to be buried in a noble land, or out of fear of trial in one's religion. A person does not know from where goodness will come to him — perhaps his life amid hardships and difficulties is better for him, or perhaps his death is better for him by preventing him from falling into sin.
