عن أَبي العبّاسِ سهلِ بنِ سعدٍ الساعِدِيِّ رضي اللّه عنه قال: مَرَّ رجُلٌ على النَبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فقالَ لِرَجُلٍ عِنْدَهُ جَالِسٍ: «ما رَأْيُكَ فِي هَذَا؟» فقال: رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَشْرَافِ النَّاسِ، هذا وَاللّهِ حَرِيٌّ إِنْ خَطَبَ أَنْ يُنْكَحَ وَإِنْ شَفَعَ أَنْ يُشَفَّعَ. فَسَكَتَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، ثُمَّ مَرَّ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ، فقال له رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مَا رأُيُكَ فِي هذَا؟» فقال: يا رسولَ اللّهِ هذا رَجُلٌ مِنْ فُقَرَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، هذَا حَرِيٌّ إِنْ خطَبَ أَنْ لا يُنْكَحَ، وَإِنْ شَفَعَ أَنْ لا يُشَفَّعَ، وَإِنْ قَالَ أَنْ لا يُسْمَعَ لِقَوْلِهِ. فقال رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «هذَا خَيْرٌ منْ مِلْءِ الأَرْضِ مِثْل هذَا» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu al-ʿAbbas Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Saʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man passed by the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he said to a man sitting with him, "What is your opinion of this man?" He replied, "He is one of the noblemen of the people. By Allah, if he proposes to a woman, he is likely to be married to her; if he intercedes, his intercession is likely to be accepted." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent. Then another man passed by, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him, "What is your opinion of this one?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, this is one of the poor Muslims. If he proposes, he is likely to be refused; if he intercedes, his intercession will not be accepted; if he speaks, he will not be listened to." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "This one is better than an earth full of the likes of that one." [Agreed upon]
الشرح · explanation
يُشَفّع: أي تُقْبل شفاعته. هذا خير: أي الذي احتقرتموه لفقرِه أفضل عند اللّه تعالى. من ملء الأرض مثل هذا: أي الذي فضّلتموه عليه.
"Yushaffaʿ": his intercession is accepted. "This one is better": meaning the one you regarded as lowly because of his poverty is more excellent in the sight of Allah. "An earth full of the likes of this": meaning, of the type you preferred over him.

التحذير من الاستهانة بالفقراء. أنّ العبرة بتقوى الإنسان في تفضيله عند ربّه لا بنسبه وشرفه في قومه. لا يلزم من ثبوت أفضليّة فقير على غنيّ أفضليّة كلّ فقير على كلّ غنيّ، فالتفضيل في الحديث خاصّ بهذا الفقير على ذاك الغنيّ، لا عامّ. الترغيب في تزويج الصالحين ولو كانوا فقراء، لأنّهم الأكفاء في الدِّين. أنّ السيادة لمجرّد حيازة الدنيا لا قيمة لها عند اللّه تعالى. من فاته حظّه من الدنيا أمكنه الاستعاضة عنه بالأعمال الصالحة والتقوى.
A warning against belittling the poor. What matters is a person's taqwa in distinguishing him before his Lord, not his lineage or standing among his people. The superiority of one poor man over one rich man does not entail the superiority of every poor man over every rich man; the preference here is specific to this poor man over that rich man, not general. Encouragement to marry the righteous even if they are poor, for they are equals in religion. Mere worldly status has no value before Allah the Exalted. Whoever has missed his share of this world can compensate for it through righteous deeds and taqwa.
