عن أَبي هُبَيْرَةَ عائِذِ بن عَمْرٍو المزَنِيِّ وَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ بيْعةِ الرِّضوانِ رضي اللّه عنه، أَنَّ أَبا سُفْيَانَ أَتَى عَلَى سلْمَانَ وصُهَيْبٍ وبلالٍ في نفَرٍ فقالوا: ما أَخَذَتْ سُيُوفُ اللّهِ مِنْ عدُوِّ اللّهِ مَأْخَذَهَا، فقال أَبُو بَكْرٍ رضي اللّه عنه: أَتَقُولُونَ هذَا لِشَيْخِ قُريْشٍ وَسيِّدِهِمْ؟ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَأَخْبَرَهُ فقال: «يا أَبَا بَكْرٍ لَعلَّكَ أَغْضَبْتَهُم؟ لَئِنْ كُنْتَ أَغْضَبْتَهُمْ لَقَدْ أَغْضَبتَ رَبَّكَ؟» فأَتَاهُمْ فقال: يا إِخْوتَاهُ آغْضَبْتُكُمْ؟ قالوا: لا، يَغْفِرُ اللّهُ لَكَ يا أُخَيَّ. رواه مسلم.

Abu Hubayrah ʿAʾidh ibn ʿAmr al-Muzanī — who was one of those who participated in the Pledge of Riḍwān (may Allah be pleased with him) — reported: Abu Sufyan came upon Salman, Ṣuhayb, and Bilal among a group of Muslims, and they said, "The swords of Allah have not yet done their work on this enemy of Allah." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do you say this about the elder and chief of Quraysh?" He then went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and told him. The Prophet said, "O Abu Bakr, perhaps you have angered them? If you have angered them, you have angered your Lord." Abu Bakr went to them and said, "O my brothers, have I angered you?" They said, "No; may Allah forgive you, our brother." [Muslim]
