ʿAishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: A woman came to me with her two daughters, asking for something. She found nothing with me except a single date, which I gave her. She divided it between her two daughters and did not eat any of it herself. Then she stood up and left. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came in, and I told him. He said, "Whoever is tried with something of these daughters and is kind to them — they will be for him a shield from the Fire." [Agreed upon]
"Asking": seeking money or food due to need. "Tried" (ibtuliya): tested and examined. It was called a trial because of the particular patience and striving required in raising girls, and because of the aversion some people have toward them, which is a remnant of pre-Islamic ways. "A shield": a covering and protection.
