Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Treat women well, for woman was created from a rib, and the most curved part of the rib is its upper part. If you try to straighten it, you will break it; and if you leave it, it will remain curved. So treat women well." [Agreed upon]
In another narration in the two Ṣaḥīḥs: "Woman is like a rib — if you straighten her, you break her; and if you enjoy her, you enjoy her while she has some crookedness." And in a narration of Muslim: "Woman was created from a rib; she will not remain straight for you on a single path. If you enjoy her, you enjoy her with crookedness; and if you go to straighten her, you break her — and breaking her is divorcing her." "Istawṣū": accept my counsel and act on it, or let one of you enjoin it upon another, which entails preserving it — for whoever enjoins something upon another becomes more eager in it himself. "Created from a rib": the rib is one of the bones of the chest cage, and here the meaning is something that curves at the side. "The most crooked part of the rib is its upper part": the scholars say the simile refers to the upper part — the head, where the tongue is, which is often the source of disputes between husband and wife. It may also refer generally to her head — her way of thinking and outlook on matters which differ from a man's. "If you go to straighten it, you break it": meaning if you try to straighten the rib into a fully straight bone, you will break it. The simile is profound: whoever is overly meticulous with his wife, demanding constant correctness in every detail, will continue until either of them grows weary and the marriage ends in divorce.

The repetition of the injunction regarding women emphasizes the necessity of caring for them, due to their vulnerability and need for someone who sees to their affairs. The hadith guides one to treat women with forbearance and patience. Islam's care for women and their cultivation preserves the welfare of society. Men are directed to bear with what may appear of women's behavior, since they are better able to endure and be patient than women.
