Riyad Al Salihin

ʿAbd Allah ibn Zamʿah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) delivering a sermon in which he mentioned the she-camel and the one who hamstrung her. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "'When the most wretched of them set forth' [al-Shams: 12] — the one who rose to hamstring her was a mighty man, hardened, protected by his clan." He then mentioned women and admonished concerning them, saying, "One of you deliberately lashes his wife as one lashes a slave, then perhaps he embraces her at the end of the day." He then admonished them concerning their laughter at someone's passing wind, and said, "Why does any one of you laugh at what he himself does?" [Agreed upon]

"Hamstrung her": cut the legs of the she-camel. "Inbaʿatha": rose up and hurried to fulfill his aim. "ʿAzīz": of high standing, few equal in greatness. "ʿĀrim": wicked and evil. "Manīʿ": strong and fortified. "In his clan": in his people. "As one lashes a slave": the severe, painful beating comparable to a slave's beating. "Yuḍājiʿuhā": has marital relations with her. "Then he admonished them concerning their laughter at passing wind": the Prophet (peace be upon him) rebuked them in passing during his sermon, for laughter at that is contrary to chivalry, violates dignity, and it is something every person experiences.

If admonition and separation do not reform a woman from whom one fears rebellion, disciplining may be done by a light strike that does not cause complete aversion. Prohibition of beating women, especially when known to be ineffective. Prohibition of laughter at one's passing of wind that he hears; one should rather overlook it. Laughter should be at something truly surprising.
