عن مُعَاويَةَ بنِ حَيْدَةَ رضي اللّه عنه قال: قلتُ: يا رسولَ اللّه ما حَقُّ زَوْجَةِ أَحَدِنَا عَلَيْهِ؟ قال: «أَن تُطْعِمَها إِذَا طَعِمْتَ، وتَكْسُوَهَا إِذَا اكْتَسيْتَ، ولا تَضْرِبِ الْوَجهَ، وَلا تُقَبِّحْ، ولا تَهْجُرْ إِلَّا في الْبَيْتِ» حديثٌ حسنٌ رواه أَبو داود وقال: معنى «لا تُقَبِّحْ» أَي: لا تقُلْ قَبَّحَكِ اللّه.
Muʿawiyah ibn Ḥaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the right of the wife of one of us over him?" He said, "That you feed her when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike the face, do not revile her, and do not separate from her except in the house." [A good hadith reported by Abu Dawud, who said that the meaning of 'do not revile her' is 'do not say, May Allah disfigure you.']

لا تُقَبِّحْ: لا تؤذيها بالكلام القبيح في خِلقتها أو نسبها أو أهلها ونحو ذلك. لا تهجر إلّا في البيت: أي لا تتحول عنها، وقيل: المراد ألّا يخرج خبر الهجر عن دائرة البيت إلى العلن.
"Do not revile her": do not hurt her with ugly speech about her appearance, lineage, family, or the like. "Do not separate from her except in the house": do not leave her — some say the meaning is not to let news of the separation go beyond the house into public knowledge.
