عن أبي هريرة رضي اللّهُ عنه، عن النبي صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «الْيَدُ الْعُلْيا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيدِ السُّفْلَى، وابْدَأْ بمَن تَعُولُ، وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى، ومَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللّهُ، ومَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللّهُ» رواه البخاريّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand; begin with those you support. The best charity is that given from a sufficiency. Whoever refrains from asking, Allah will protect him; and whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him independent." [Bukhari]
الشرح · explanation
اليد العليا: هي اليد المنفقة. يستعفف: من يطلب من اللّهِ العفة؛ وهي الكفّ عن الحرام والغنى عمّا في أيدي الناس، مع بذله لأسباب العفة. يعفه اللّه: أي يصيِّره اللّه تعالى بعونه وتوفيقه عفيفًا. ومن يستغن: يقنع ويسأل اللّه أن يرزقه غنى النفس. يغنه اللّه: يجعل اللّه في نفسه القناعة والرضا.
"The upper hand": the hand that gives. "Yastaʿfif": one who asks Allah for chastity — that is, restraint from the unlawful and independence from what is in people's hands, while taking the means of chastity. "Allah will protect him": by His help and success, Allah will make him chaste. "Whoever seeks to be self-sufficient": is content and asks Allah to grant him contentment of the soul. "Allah will enrich him": Allah places in his soul contentment and acceptance.

الحثّ على الإنفاق في وجوه الخير. الأيدي أربعة هي في الفضل كما يلي: أعلاها المنفقة، ثم المتعففة عن الأخذ، ثم الآخذة بغير سؤال، وأدناها السائلة. من استعان باللّه تعالى على حصول شيء مع بذل أسبابه أُعين عليه. أن العفّة والقناعة من أهم صفات المؤمن الصالح. أفضل الصدقات ما أخرجه الإنسان من ماله بعدما يستبقي منه قدر الكفاية لنفسه وعياله. فضل الإنفاق على العيال على غيره من النفقات، ولذا قال صلى اللّهُ عليه وسلم: «وابدأ بمن تعول».
Encouragement to spend in avenues of good. The hands are four, in merit as follows: the highest is the giving hand; then the one abstaining from taking; then the one taking without asking; and the lowest is the begging hand. Whoever seeks Allah's help in attaining something while taking its means will be helped in it. Chastity and contentment are among the most important traits of the righteous believer. The best charities are what a person gives from his wealth after setting aside sufficiency for himself and his dependents. The priority of spending on family over other spending — hence he (peace be upon him) said: "Begin with those you support."
