عن عَمْرِو بن شُعْيبٍ، عن أَبيه، عن جَدِّهِ رضي اللّه عنه قال: قال رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مُرُوا أَوْلادَكُمْ بِالصَّلاةِ وهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ سبعِ سِنِينَ، واضْرِبُوهمْ علَيْهَا وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ عَشْرٍ، وفرِّقُوا بيْنَهُمْ في المضَاجعِ» حديثٌ حسن، رواه أبو داود بإِسنادٍ حسنٍ.
ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and strike them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds." المضاجع: جمع مضجع، وهو مكان الاستلقاء للنوم.
"Al-maḍājiʿ": plural of maḍjaʿ — the place of lying down for sleep.

يجب على الأولياء من آباء وغيرهم أمرُ أولادهم بالصلاة، وتعليمهم أحكامها وأعمالها وشروطها وتعويدهم القيام بها، وتأديبهم على تركها ولو بالضرب غير المبرّح. على الآباء صيانة أولادهم ممّا قد يثير الفتنة في نفوسهم، وخاصّةً في مرحلة المراهقة، وعلى الأب أن يبين حرمة كشف العورة، وعليه أن يفصلهم بعضهم عن بعض في المضاجع، وإذا توفر السكن فيخصص لكلٍ من الذكور والإناث حجرة مستقلة.
It is obligatory upon guardians — fathers and others — to command their children to pray, teach them its rulings, practices, and conditions, and habituate them to performing it; and to discipline them for neglecting it even with a non-severe strike. Parents must protect their children from what may stir temptation in their souls, especially in adolescence; the father must explain the prohibition of exposing the ʿawrah and must separate them in their sleeping places. If housing permits, each of the boys and girls should have a separate room.
