عن أبي ثُريَّةَ سَبْرَةَ بنِ مَعْبدٍ الجُهَنِيِّ رضي اللّهُ عنه قال: قال رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «عَلِّمُوا الصَّبِيَّ الصَّلاةَ لِسَبْعِ سِنِينَ، وَاضْرِبُوهُ علَيْهَا ابْنَ عشْرِ سِنِينَ» حديث حسنٌ رواه أَبو داود والترمِذي.
Abu Thurayyah Sabrah ibn Maʿbad al-Juhanī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Teach the child prayer at seven years, and strike him for it at ten." [A good hadith reported by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]

ولَفْظُ أبي داوُد: «مرُوا الصَّبِيَّ بِالصَّلاةِ إِذَا بَلَغَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ».
The wording of Abu Dawud is: "Command the child to pray when he reaches seven years of age."

على الآباء والأمهات أن يكونوا القدوة الحسنة في أداء الطاعات، ليكون توجيههم لأبنائهم قائمًا على التطبيق والمحاكاة والقدوة، إذ لا فائدة من طلب الأب من أبنائه أداء الصلاة وهو غير ملتزم بها. يتعيّن على المعلِّمين والمدرِّسين أن يكونوا القدوة الحسنة في أداء الصلاة وسائر العبادات، ليكون توجيههم مؤثرًا وأدعى إلى استجابة الأطفال والمتعلمين.
Fathers and mothers must be the good example in performing acts of obedience, so that their directing of their children is based on practice, imitation, and example; there is no benefit in a father demanding his children perform the prayer while he himself is not committed to it. Teachers and instructors must be the good example in performing prayer and other acts of worship, so that their direction is more influential and more apt to be heeded by children and students.
