عن أبي ذرٍّ رضي اللّهُ عنه قال: قال رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «يَا أَبَا ذرٍّ إِذا طَبَخْتَ مَرَقَةً فَأَكْثِرْ مَاءَها، وَتَعَاهَدْ جِيرَانَكَ» رواه مسلم.
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "O Abu Dharr, when you cook a broth, add more water and look to your neighbors." [Muslim]

وفي رواية له عن أبي ذرٍّ قال: إنّ خليلي صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أَوْصَانِي: «إِذا طبخْتَ مَرَقًا فَأَكْثِرْ مَاءَه،ُ ثُمَّ انْظُرْ أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ مِنْ جِيرانِكَ فَأَصِبْهُمْ مِنْهَا بِمعْرُوفٍ». مرقة: ما يُطبخ بالماء من لحم وغيره. تعاهدْ: تفقدْ. فأصبهم: فأرسل إليهم. بمعروف: بشيء متوسط ينتفعون به.
In another narration from Abu Dharr who said: My beloved friend (peace be upon him) advised me: "When you cook a broth, add more water, then look to a neighbor family from among your neighbors and give them some of it as a kindness." "Broth" (maraqah): what is cooked in water of meat or the like. "Taʿāhad": attend to. "Fa-aṣibhum": send some to them. "With something fitting": something modest they can benefit from.

استحباب إهداء شيء من الطعام إلى الجيران، وخاصّة إذا كانت له رائحة، وكان الجيران في حاجة، أو لا يتيسر لهم طبخُه. تسهيل الأمر على مُريد الخير؛ حيث لم يقل: فأكثِرْ لحمَها أو طعامَها؛ إذ لا يسهلُ ذلك على كثير من الناس. ترغيب الإسلام في حسن العلاقة الاجتماعية بين الجيران والتكافل والتعاون بينهم.
The recommendation of offering something of the food to neighbors, particularly when it has a fragrance, and when the neighbors are in need or cannot easily prepare food themselves. Making the matter easy for the one who wants to do good; the Prophet did not say 'add more meat or food,' for that is not easy for many people. Islam's encouragement of good social relations between neighbors, and of solidarity and cooperation among them.
