عن عائشةَ رضي اللّهُ عنها قالتُ: قلت: يا رسولَ اللّهِ إِنَّ لي جَارَيْنِ، فَإِلى أَيِّهِمَا أُهْدِي؟ قال: «إلى أَقْرَبِهِمِا مِنْكِ بابًا» رواه البخاريّ.
ʿAishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbors; to which of them should I give a gift?" He said, "To the one whose door is closer to you." [Bukhari]

استحباب تقديم الجار الأقرب فالأقرب إذا لم يَقْدر على الإحسان إلى الجميع. أنَّ الأقرب يرى ما يدخل بيتَ جاره من هديّة وغيرها، فيتشوَّفُ لها بخلاف الأبعد. سؤال الصحابة رضي اللّه عنهم النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم عن تصرّفاتهم ليعلموا السنّة فيعملوا بها.
The recommendation of giving priority to the nearer neighbor, then the one after him, if one is not able to be kind to all. The nearer neighbor sees what enters his neighbor's house of gifts and such, so he inclines toward them — unlike the more distant neighbor. The Companions' (may Allah be pleased with them) questioning of the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding their conduct so that they might know and act upon the Sunnah.
