عن أبي هريرةَ رضي اللّهُ عنه أَن رجلًا قال: يا رسولَ اللّهِ إِنَّ لي قَرابَةً أَصِلُهُمْ وَيَقْطَعُوني، وَأُحسِنُ إِلَيْهِم وَيُسِيؤونَ إِليَّ، وأَحْلُمُ عَنْهُمْ وَيجْهَلُونَ علَيَّ، فقال: «لَئِنْ كُنْتَ كَمَا قُلْتَ، فَكَأَنَّمَا تُسِفُّهُمُ المَلَّ، ولا يَزَالُ معكَ مِنَ اللّهِ ظهِيرٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ما دُمْتَ عَلَى ذَلكَ» رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): A man said: O Messenger of Allah, I have relatives—I keep ties with them and they sever me; I am kind to them and they wrong me; I am forbearing toward them and they are rude to me. He said: "If you are as you have said, then it is as though you are feeding them hot ash; and a helper from Allah will not cease to support you against them so long as you remain like that." أحلم: أصبر وأصفح. يجهلون عليّ: يسيؤون إليّ. تُسِفُّهُمْ: تُطْعِمُهُمْ. المَلُّ: الرَّمادُ الحارُّ. ظهير: مُعِين.
"I am forbearing" (aḥlumu): I am patient and overlook (their faults). "They are rude to me" (yajhalūna ‘alayya): they wrong me. "You feed them" (tusiffuhum): you cause them to consume. "Al-mall": hot ashes. "Ẓahīr" (helper): a supporter.

الحثّ على الإحسان إلى المسيء، لأنّه ربّما يرتدع فيعود إلى الإحسان. حصول العون والتأييد من اللّهِ تعالى لمن يصل رحِمه رغم قطعهم له. ينبغي لمن فُضِّل على أقاربه أن يتواضع لهم ويرفق بهم، فعداوة الأقارب صعبة لذا يُستحبّ الصبر على إيذائهم.
Encouragement to show kindness to the wrongdoer, for he may perchance be deterred and return to kindness himself. The attainment of help and support from Allah Most High for the one who maintains ties with his kin despite their severing him. Whoever has been favored over his relatives ought to be humble toward them and gentle with them; for the enmity of relatives is severe, and so it is recommended to bear patiently with their hurt.
