On the authority of Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: "The one who maintains ties is not the one who reciprocates in kind; rather, the maintainer of ties is the one who, when his kin sever him, restores the bond." [Reported by al-Bukhari.]
"The maintainer" (al-wāṣil): the one whose maintenance of ties with his relatives is complete. "The reciprocator" (al-mukāfi'): the one who repays his counterpart with the like of his deed and gives him in return for what he received. "When his kin severed him" (qaṭa‘at raḥimuhu): meaning his relatives and kinsfolk cut their ties with him. "Restored the bond" (waṣalahā): meaning he was kind to them and showed them goodness; that is, when prevented, he gave; when severed, he reconnected.

Whoever begins the maintaining of ties is the (true) maintainer; whoever does not give more than he receives is the reciprocator; and the one to whom kindness is shown but who does not respond in kind is the severer. Affirmation of the importance of maintaining ties of kinship and exhortation to it. Just as reciprocation by maintaining ties may occur from both sides, so too may severance of ties occur from both sides.
