On the authority of Zaynab al-Thaqafiyya, the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him and her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Give in charity, O womenfolk, even from your jewelry." She said: So I returned to Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud and said to him: You are a man of slender means, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has commanded us with charity, so go to him and ask him; if (giving it to you) would suffice on my behalf (well and good), and if not I shall direct it to others. Abdullah said: No—you yourself go to him. So I set out, and lo, a woman of the Anṣār was at the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); my need was her need. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had been clothed with awe. So Bilal came out to us, and we said to him: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and inform him that two women at the door ask: Does charity given to their husbands and to orphans in their care suffice (as zakat)? But do not inform him who we are. Bilal entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and asked him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: "Who are they?" He said: A woman of the Anṣār, and Zaynab. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Which of the Zaynabs is she?" He said: The wife of Abdullah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "For them are two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity." [Agreed upon.]

It is permissible to direct charity—even the obligatory zakat—to a husband and to children whose maintenance is not incumbent upon the giver (such as the wife), since their maintenance is upon their father. It is permissible for a woman to leave her home to ask about matters of religion. Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon women just as it is obligatory upon men. The necessity of asking about whatever is unclear in matters of religion.
