عن أبي سُفْيانَ صخْرِ بنِ حربٍ رضيَ اللّهُ عنه في حدِيثِهِ الطَّويلِ في قصَّةِ هِرقْلَ أَنَّ هِرقْلَ قالَ لأَبي سُفْيَان: فَماذَا يأْمُرُكُمْ بِهِ؟ -يَعْني النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم- قال: قلت: يقولُ: «اعْبُدُوا اللّهَ وَحدَهُ، ولا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا، واتْرُكُوا ما يقُولُ آباؤُكُمْ، ويأْمُرُنَا بالصَّلاةِ، والصِّدْقِ، والعفَافِ، والصِّلَةِ» متفقٌ عليه.
On the authority of Abu Sufyan Ṣakhr ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him), in his long hadith concerning the story of Heraclius: Heraclius said to Abu Sufyan: "And what does he command you with?"—meaning the Prophet (peace be upon him). He said: I said: He says: "Worship Allah alone and associate nothing with Him, and abandon what your forefathers say." And he commands us with prayer, truthfulness, chastity, and the maintaining of ties (of kinship). [Agreed upon.]

من خصائص دعوةِ الأنبياء جميعًا الدعوة الى التوحيد في العبودية للهِ وعدم الإشراك به، وفي ذلك تَحَرُّر من العبودية لغير اللهِ بجميع صورها، وهذا هو مفهوم الحرية في الإسلام: تحرُّر من كل تقليد أو تبعية أو انتماء إلَّا للخالق عزّ وجل الذي خضع له الكون كله. الصدق والعفاف والصلة من أبرز مكارم الأخلاق في الإسلام ودليلٌ على الاستقامة والتعاون في المجتمع. وجوب التفكير في المبادئ والمعتقدات والحذر من التقليد الأعمى.
Among the distinctive features of the call of all the prophets is the call to oneness in worship to Allah and refraining from associating any partners with Him; in that there is liberation from servitude to other than Allah in all its forms—and this is the meaning of freedom in Islam: liberation from every blind imitation, dependency, or affiliation, except to the Creator, the Mighty and Majestic, to whom the entire universe submits. Truthfulness, chastity, and maintaining the ties of kinship are among the most prominent of noble character traits in Islam, and proof of uprightness and cooperation in society. The obligation to reflect on principles and beliefs, and to beware of blind imitation.
