Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: I had a wife whom I loved, but 'Umar disliked her. He said to me: Divorce her. I refused. So 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Divorce her." [Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a good and authentic (hasan sahih) hadith]

"I had a wife": that is, a woman in my marriage and under my protection. Of this is the saying of Allah the Exalted concerning the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut: "They were under two of Our righteous servants" [al-Tahrim: 10]. "'Umar disliked her": for a religious reason and on account of some trait in her character.

'Umar feared that his son's wife might draw 'Abd Allah into some harm in his religion. If the father is a person of religion and uprightness, and he commands his child to do something that religion sanctions, then the child is obliged to obey him even if it contradicts his own desire. Had 'Umar been acting unjustly toward her, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have agreed with him in this. Ibn 'Umar loved his wife with a natural love, while 'Umar disliked her for a religious reason; thus he commanded him to divorce her, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) upheld 'Umar and ordered Ibn 'Umar to divorce her.
