عن أَبي بَكرَةَ نُفَيْعِ بنِ الحارثِ رضيَ اللهُ عنه قال: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَكْبَرِ الْكَبائِرِ؟» -ثلاثًا- قُلنا: بلَى يا رسولَ اللهِ: قالَ: «الإِشْراكُ بِاللهِ، وعُقُوقُ الْوالِدَيْن» وكان مُتَّكِئًا فَجلَسَ، فقالَ: «أَلَا وقوْلُ الزُّورِ وشهادَةُ الزُّورِ» فَمَا زَالَ يُكَرِّرُهَا حتَّى قُلنَا: ليْتَهُ سَكَتَ. متفق عليه.
Abu Bakrah Nufay' ibn al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not inform you of the greatest of the major sins?" — three times. We said: Indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Associating partners with Allah, and disobedience to parents." He had been reclining, but then he sat up and said: "Beware! And false speech and false testimony." He kept repeating it until we wished he would stop. [Agreed upon]

الكبائر: الذنوب الكبيرة التي ورد فيها وعيد شديد في القرآن الكريم أو في السنة. عقوق الوالدين: العقوق مأخوذ من العقّ وهو القطع، وضابطه أن يفعل مع أحد والديه ما يتأذى به من فعل أو قول. قول الزور: كل قول باطل.
The major sins (al-kaba'ir): the grave sins concerning which a severe threat has come in the Noble Qur'an or in the Sunnah. Disobedience to parents ('uquq): derived from al-'aqq, meaning to sever; its measure is that a person does to either of his parents, in deed or word, something that causes them harm. False speech: every false and baseless utterance.

الذنوب تتفاوت بحسب مفاسدها. الترهيب من عقوق الوالدين وشهادة الزور. أعظم الذنوب الإشراك بالله، ثم عقوق الوالدين، ثم قول الزور، وهذه الأمور من أكبر الكبائر لما يترتب عليها من مفاسد جسيمة. محبة الصحابة للنبيّ صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم وشفقتهم عليه. الإشراك بالله بهتان وطغيان وافتراء على الله، وذلة وخضوع لغير الله. عقوق الوالدين: نكران للجميل ونسيان لحقهما. شهادة الزور مصدر بلاء وانحراف وجور وشر كبير، وقد انتشرت بين الناس بأسماء برّاقة لتمريرها وإدخالها في حياة النّاس ممّا يؤدي إلى زيادة الفساد.
Sins differ in gravity according to the harm they cause. A stern warning against disobedience to parents and against false testimony. The greatest of sins is associating partners with Allah, then disobedience to parents, then false speech; these are among the gravest of the major sins because of the immense corruption they entail. The Companions' love for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and their compassion toward him. Associating partners with Allah is slander, transgression, and fabrication against Allah, and abasement and submission to other than Allah. Disobedience to parents is ingratitude for kindness and a forgetting of their rights. False testimony is a source of affliction, deviation, injustice, and great evil; it has spread among people under attractive names devised to slip it through and introduce it into people's lives, leading to increased corruption.
