عن عبدِ اللهِ بنِ عَمْرٍو بنِ العاصِ رضي اللهُ عنهما عن النبيّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «الْكَبائِرُ: الإِشْراكُ بِاللهِ، وعقُوقُ الْوالِدَيْنِ، وقَتْلُ النَّفْسِ، والْيَمِينُ الْغَموس» رواه البخاري.
'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The major sins are: associating partners with Allah, disobedience to parents, killing a soul, and the false oath (al-yamin al-ghamus)." [Reported by al-Bukhari]

اليمِين الْغَمُوس: الّتي يَحْلِفُهَا كَاذِبًا عامِدًا، سُمِّيَت غَمُوسًا، لأَنَّهَا تَغْمِسُ الحالِفَ في الإِثم.
The false oath (al-yamin al-ghamus): the oath a person swears while lying deliberately. It is called ghamus because it plunges the one who swears it into sin.

التحذير من الوقوع في هذه المعاصي وبيان أنها من كبائر الذنوب. اقتصار النبيّ صلّى اللهُ عليه وسلّم على ذكر بعض الكبائر؛ إما لاقتِضَاءِ المقام، وهو أنّ بعض الحاضرين مقصّر في البعد عنها أو هو واقع فيها، وإمّا لكونها أعظمَ الكبائر إثمًا. خطورة اليمين الكاذبة، ويزداد الإثم إذا ترتب على هذه اليمين أخذ حقٍّ للآخرين ظُلمًا.
A warning against falling into these sins, and a clarification that they are among the major sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) confined himself to mentioning only some of the major sins, either because the situation called for it — in that some of those present were negligent in keeping away from them or had fallen into them — or because these are the gravest of the major sins in sinfulness. The gravity of the false oath; the sin is increased when such an oath results in unjustly seizing the rights of others.
