عن أبي أُسَيْدٍ -بضم الهمزة وفتح السين- مالِكِ بنِ رَبِيعَةَ السَّاعِدِيِّ رضي اللهُ عنه قالَ: بَيْنا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ إذ جاءَهُ رجُلٌ مِنْ بني سَلِمَة فقالَ: يا رسولَ اللهِ هَلْ بَقِيَ مِن بِرِّ أَبَوَيَّ شَيءٌ أَبَرُّهُمَا بِهِ بَعدَ مَوْتِهِمَا؟ فقالَ: «نَعَمْ، الصَّلاَةُ علَيْهِمَا، والاسْتِغْفَارُ لَهُما، وإِنْفاذُ عَهْدِهِما من بَعدِهِما، وصِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ التي لا تُوصَلُ إِلَّا بِهِمَا، وإِكَرَامُ صَدِيقِهِما» رواه أبو داود.
Abu Usayd—with a dammah on the hamzah and a fathah on the sin—Malik ibn Rabi'ah al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man from the tribe of Banu Salimah came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is there any act of kindness left by which I may honor my parents after their death?" He replied: "Yes: praying for them, seeking forgiveness for them, fulfilling their pledges after them, maintaining the ties of kinship that can only be maintained through them, and honoring their friends." الصلاة عليهما: أي الدعاء لهما. إنفاذ عهدهما: أي إمضاء وصيّتهما.
Praying for them (al-salah alayhima): that is, making supplication for them. Fulfilling their pledges (infadh ahdihima): that is, carrying out their will.

Seizing the opportunity of one's parents' lifetime to be dutiful to them. Among the kinds of dutifulness is making supplication for one's parents. Among the ways of being dutiful to parents in their life and after their death: carrying out their will, maintaining their ties of kinship, and honoring their friends. A child's supplication for his parents after their death is accepted, and its reward reaches them.
