Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A man set out to visit a brother of his in another village. Allah, Exalted is He, stationed an angel on his road to wait for him. When the man came upon him, the angel asked: 'Where are you headed?' He said: 'I am going to a brother of mine in this village.' The angel asked: 'Have you done him any favour that you are nurturing?' He said: 'No, except that I love him for the sake of Allah, Exalted is He.' The angel said: 'Then I am a messenger of Allah to you, [come] to tell you that Allah has loved you just as you have loved him for His sake.'" Reported by Muslim.

The immense virtue of loving and visiting one another for the sake of Allah, Exalted is He. Love for the sake of Allah must not be tied to worldly interests, so that love for the sake of Allah neither increases with increased benefit nor decreases with its disappearance; rather, it is connected to performing acts of obedience and abandoning acts of disobedience. Thus some scholars defined it by saying: "Love for the sake of Allah is that which does not increase with closeness nor decrease with estrangement." A human being can see and speak with an angel.
