عنْ ابن عبّاسٍ رضي اللهُ عنهما قال: قال النبيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ لِجِبْرِيلَ عليه السلام: «مَا يمْنَعُكَ أَنْ تَزُورَنَا أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا تَزُورُنَا؟» فَنَزَلَتْ: ومَا نَتَنَزَّلُ إِلاَّ بِأَمْرِ رَبِّكَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَما خَلْفَنَا وَمَا بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ. [مريم ٦٤] رواه البخاريّ.
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Jibril (peace be upon him): "What prevents you from visiting us more often than you do?" Then this verse was revealed: "And we [angels] descend not except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs that which is before us and that which is behind us and what is in between." [Maryam: 64] Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
نَتَنَزَّل: التنزّل نزولٌ على مهل. له ما بين أيدينا وما خلفنا: ما أمامنا وخلفنا من الأزمنة والأمكنة، فلا ننتقل من شيء إلى شيء إلا بأمره وإرادته.
"We descend" (natanazzal): tanazzul means to descend gradually and unhurriedly. "To Him belongs that which is before us and that which is behind us": that is, the times and places ahead of us and behind us, so we move from one thing to another only by His command and His will.
