عن أبي هريرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنه أَنَّ النبيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «الرَّجُلُُ عَلَى دِينِ خَلِيلِهِ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْ يُخَالِلُ» رواه أبو داود والترمذيّ بإِسنادٍ صحيح، وقالَ حديثٌ حسن.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a close friend." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with a sound chain of narration, and al-Tirmidhi said it is a sound (hasan) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
دين خليله: أي طريقته وسيرته ومنهجه في الحياة. خليله: الخليل: الحبيب والصديق والرفيق الذي تخلّلت المودة والمحبة قلبه. فلينظر أحدكم من يخالل: أي فليتأمَّل وليتدبَّر بعين بصيرته من يصادق.
"The religion of his close friend": that is, his way, his conduct, and his approach to life. "His close friend" (khalil): the khalil is the beloved, the friend, and the companion whose affection and love have penetrated deeply into one's heart. "So let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a close friend": that is, let him reflect and consider with the eye of insight whom he befriends.
