عن أبي موسى الأَشْعَرِيِّ رضيَ اللهُ عنه أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «المَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ». متفق عليه. وفي رواية قال: قيل للنّبيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ الرجلُ يُحبُّ القومَ وَلَمَّا يلحقُ بهم؟ قال: «المَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ».
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person will be with those whom he loves." Agreed upon. In another narration he said: It was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): A man loves a people but has not yet caught up with them [in deeds]? He said: "A person will be with those whom he loves."
الشرح · explanation
مع من أحب: أي يُحشر مع محبوبه ويجتمع به. ولمّا يلحق بهم: أي لا يستطيع أن يعمل بعملهم.
"With those whom he loves": that is, he will be gathered with the one he loves and joined to him. "But has not yet caught up with them": that is, he is not able to perform deeds like theirs.

على المرء أن يختار الأصدقاء والإخوان من الصالحين والمتقين ليُحشر معهم، وهذا من فضل صحبة الأخيار. كون المرء يُحشر مع من أحبّ لا يستلزم مساواته له في منزلته وعلو مرتبته، لأن ذلك متفاوت بتفاوت الأعمال الصالحة. على المرء أن يجتنب صحبة الأشرار والفساق كي لا يحشر معهم، فإن الصاحب ساحب.
A person should choose his friends and brothers from among the righteous and the God-fearing so that he may be gathered with them; this is part of the merit of keeping company with the good. That a person is gathered with those whom he loves does not necessitate that he be equal to them in rank and lofty station, for that varies according to the variation in righteous deeds. A person should avoid the company of the wicked and the sinful so that he is not gathered with them, for the companion draws one along.
