عن أَنسٍ رضيَ اللهُ عنهُ قال: خَطَبَنا رَسولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم خُطْبَةً ما سَمِعْتُ مِثْلَهَا قَطُّ، قالَ: «لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قلِيلًا، ولبَكيْتمْ كَثِيرًا» فَغَطَّى أَصْحابُ رسولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وجُوهَهُمْ، وَلهُمْ خَنينٌ. متفقٌ عليه. وفي رواية: بَلَغَ رسولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم عَنْ أَصْحابِهِ شَيءٌ، فَخَطَبَ فقال: «عُرضَتْ عَلَيَّ الجنَّةُ والنَّارُ، فَلَمْ أَرَ كَاليَوْمِ في الخَيْرِ وَالشَّرِّ، ولَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعلَمُ لَضحِكْتُمْ قلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا» فَما أتَى عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رسولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يوْمٌ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ، غَطَّوْا رُؤُوسهُمْ وَلَهُمْ خَنِينٌ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered to us a sermon the like of which I had never heard before. He said, "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much." Thereupon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) covered their faces and the sound of their weeping could be heard. [Agreed upon] In another narration: Something reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning his Companions, so he delivered a sermon and said, "Paradise and Hell were displayed to me, and I have never seen the like of this day in regard to good and evil. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much." No day came upon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) more severe than that one; they covered their heads and the sound of their weeping could be heard.
الشرح · explanation
قَطّ: أبدًا. خَنِين: هُوَ بُكَاء مَعَ غُنَّةٍ وَانْتِشَاقِ الصَّوتِ مِنَ الأَنْفِ. ما أعلم: أي من أهوال الآخرة وما أُعِدّ في الجنّة من النعيم وفي النّار من العذاب الأليم. فَلَمْ أَرَ كَاليَوْمِ في الخَيْر وَالشَّرِّ: كناية عن كثرة ما رآه صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم من تفاصيل الخير والشر.
"Qatt": never, at all. "Khanin": weeping accompanied by a nasal sound and the drawing of breath through the nose. "What I know": namely, the terrors of the Hereafter and what has been prepared in Paradise of bliss and in Hell of painful torment. "I have never seen the like of this day in regard to good and evil": an expression of the great amount of detail of good and evil that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had seen.

التحريض على كثرة البكاء خوفًا من عقاب الله، والزجر عن كثرة الضحك، لأنّه يؤدّي إلى الغفلة وقسوة القلب. فضيلة الصحابة وكمالهم وتأثرهم رضي الله عنهم بالموعظة وشدة خوفهم من عقاب الله عز وجل. الجنة والنار مخلوقتان وموجودتان الآن.
Encouragement to weep abundantly out of fear of Allah's punishment, and a rebuke against laughing excessively, since it leads to heedlessness and hardness of the heart. The excellence and perfection of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), how they were moved by admonition, and the intensity of their fear of the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Paradise and Hell are created and exist now.
