عن أبي ذَرٍّ رضيَ اللهُ عنه، قال: قالَ النبيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «يقولُ اللهُ عزَّ وجَلّ: مَنْ جاءَ بِالحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِها أَوْ أَزِيدُ، ومَنْ جاءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَجَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِثْلُهَا أَوْ أَغْفِرُ، وَمَنْ تَقَرَّبَ مِنِّي شِبْرًا تَقَرَّبْتُ مِنْهُ ذِرَاعًا، ومنْ تَقَرَّبَ مِنِّي ذرَاعًا تَقَرَّبْتُ مِنْهُ باعًا، وَمَنْ أَتاني يمشي أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْولَةً، وَمَنْ لَقِيَني بِقُرَابِ الأَرْضِ خَطِيئَةً لا يُشْرِكُ بِي شَيْئًا لَقِيتُهُ بمثْلِها مغْفِرَةً» رواه مسلم.
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times its like or more, and whoever brings an evil deed shall have only a recompense equal to it, or I forgive him. Whoever draws near to Me by a hand's span, I draw near to him by a cubit; whoever draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by an arm's length; whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him hastening. And whoever meets Me with sins nearly filling the earth, yet associates nothing with Me, I shall meet him with forgiveness equal to it.'" Reported by Muslim.

مَنْ تَقَرَّبَ: أي إِلَيَّ بِطاعَتي. تَقَرَّبْتُ: أي إِلَيْهِ بِرحْمَتي، وإِنْ زَادَ زِدْتُ. باعًا: يعدل المسافة ما بين طرفي الكفّين إذا بسط الإنسان ذراعيه يمينا ويسارا، وهو قدر أربعة أذرع. فَإِنْ أَتاني يَمشي: َأَسْرَعَ في طاعَتي. أَتَيْتُه هَرْوَلَة: أَي صَبَبْتُ علَيْهِ الرَّحْمَة، وَسَبَقْتهُ بها، ولَمْ أُحْوِجْهُ إِلى المَشْيِ الْكَثِيرِ في الوُصُولِ إِلى المَقْصُودِ. وَقُرَابُ الأَرْضِ: معناه ما يُقارِبُ مِلأَها.
"Whoever draws near to Me": that is, by obeying Me. "I draw near to him": that is, with My mercy; and if he increases, I increase. "An arm's length (ba)": the span between the tips of the two hands when a person extends his arms to the right and left, equal to about four cubits. "If he comes to Me walking": that is, hastens in obeying Me. "I come to him hastening": that is, I pour mercy upon him and outstrip him with it, sparing him much walking to reach his goal. "Nearly filling the earth": meaning what comes close to filling it.

Encouragement and exhortation to strive earnestly in obedience and worship, repelling slackness and laziness. Hope in Allah's pardon and mercy, and not despairing of His forgiveness; the lowest level of multiplying good deeds is tenfold, while the promise has come of seventy and seven hundred. The hadith affirms a number of the attributes of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in a manner befitting His majesty and greatness.
