Riyad Al Salihin

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are the two things that make Paradise or Hell binding?" He said: "Whoever dies associating nothing with Allah enters Paradise, and whoever dies associating anything with Him enters the Fire." Reported by Muslim.

"The two binding things": the trait that makes Paradise binding and the trait that makes the Fire binding.

Dying upon pure monotheism (tawhid) is a cause for entering Paradise. The disobedient Muslim is not made to abide in the Fire forever, and major sins do not strip away the name of faith. Paradise is forbidden to the polytheist, and upon this there is scholarly consensus.
