Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the words of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, concerning Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him): "My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me — then he is of me..." [Ibrahim: 36], and the words of Isa (peace and blessings be upon him): "If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed it is You who are the Almighty, the All-Wise" [al-Ma'idah: 118]. He then raised his hands and said, "O Allah, my nation, my nation!" and he wept. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said, "O Jibril, go to Muhammad — though your Lord knows best — and ask him: what makes him weep?" Jibril came to him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told him what he had said — though He knows best. Allah, the Exalted, then said, "O Jibril, go to Muhammad and say: We shall surely please you concerning your nation and shall not grieve you." Narrated by Muslim.
