Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "As for the disbeliever, when he does a good deed he is given some provision for it in this world; but as for the believer, Allah, the Exalted, stores up his good deeds for him in the Hereafter and grants him provision in this world for his obedience." In another narration: "Allah does not wrong a believer of any good deed: he is rewarded for it in this world and recompensed for it in the Hereafter. But as for the disbeliever, he is given provision in this world for the good deeds he did for the sake of Allah, the Exalted, so that when he passes on to the Hereafter, he has no good deed left for which to be recompensed." Narrated by Muslim.

The disbeliever is recompensed for his good deeds in this world, either by an increase in his wealth, status, and standing, or by the warding off of some harm, but he has no share in the Hereafter, because disbelief nullifies reward in the Hereafter. The believer is recompensed for his good deeds and acts of obedience in both this world and the Hereafter. The acceptance of deeds depends upon Islam.
