عن ابنِ مسعودٍ، رضيَ اللهُ عنه، قال: كُنَّا مَعَ رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم في قُبَّةٍ نَحوًا مِنْ أَرَبَعِين رجلًا، فقال: «أَتَرضَونَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا رُبُعَ أَهْلِ الجَنَّةِ؟» قُلْنَا: نَعَم، قال: «أَتَرضَوْنَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا ثُلُثَ أَهْلِ الجَنَّةِ؟» قُلْنَا: نَعَم، قال: «وَالَّذِي نَفسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ إِنِّي لأَرجُو أَنْ تَكُونُوا نِصفَ أَهْلِ الجَنَّةِ، وَذَلِك أَنَّ الجَنَّةَ لا يَدْخُلُهَا إِلَّا نَفْسٌ مُسْلِمَةٌ، وَمَا أَنْتُمْ في أَهْلِ الشِّركِ إِلَّا كالشَّعرَةِ البَيْضَاءِ في جِلْدِ الثَّوْرِ الأَسودِ، أَوْ كَالشَّعَرَةِ السَّوْدَاءِ في جِلْدِ الثَّوْرِ الأَحْمَرِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a tent, about forty men, and he said, "Would you be pleased to be a quarter of the people of Paradise?" We said, "Yes." He said, "Would you be pleased to be a third of the people of Paradise?" We said, "Yes." He said, "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I truly hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise. That is because none shall enter Paradise except a Muslim soul, and among the people of polytheism you are but like a white hair on the hide of a black bull, or like a black hair on the hide of a red bull." It is permissible to repeat glad tidings time after time, so as to renew gratitude time after time. The Muslims of the nation of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are half the people of Paradise, and in another narration two-thirds of the people of Paradise — this is evidence of this nation's standing among the other earlier nations. None shall enter Paradise except a believer. The people of polytheism are more numerous than the people of faith. It is permissible to use parables to clarify the intended meaning, which is a prophetic, educational method.
