Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man kissed a woman, then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the early hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds drive away misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember" [Hud: 114]. The man said, "Is this for me, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "It is for all of my nation, every one of them." Agreed upon.

His saying, the Exalted, "and in the early hours of the night": meaning, hours at its beginning, near to the daytime; and it is said that what is meant by it is the Maghrib and Isha prayers.

Prayer expiates whatever minor sins one may have committed. What counts is the generality of the wording, not the specific occasion of revelation; so the meaning of the verse is general, applying to everyone who commits a minor sin, and is not particular to this man alone or to the sin he committed alone. Good deeds drive away misdeeds. Encouragement to repent from sins.
