Riyad Al Salihin

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Recite the Qur'an to me." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite it to you, when it was revealed to you?!" He said: "I love to hear it from someone other than myself." So I recited to him Surat al-Nisa', until I came to this verse: {How will it be when We bring forward from every nation a witness, and We bring you against these as a witness} [verse 41]. He said: "That is enough for you now." I turned to him, and behold, his eyes were overflowing with tears. Agreed upon.

The recommendation of listening to the Qur'an from others, for that is more conducive to understanding and reflection, since one is not occupied with the precision of the wording and giving it its due. The permissibility of the student reciting to the teacher, and that the superior one should not disdain learning from one less than him. The permissibility of instructing others to stop reciting when there is a benefit in stopping. Urging reflection upon the Qur'an when reciting or listening to it, so that it may have an effect upon the soul. The merit of weeping out of fear of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, when hearing His verses, while maintaining stillness, good silence, and not crying out.
