عن أنسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: خَطَبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم خُطْبَةً مَا سَمِعْتُ مِثْلَهَا قَطُّ فقالَ: «لَوْ تعْلمُونَ ما أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كثيرًا» قال: فَغَطَّى أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وُجُوهَهُمْ ولهمْ خَنِينٌ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon the like of which I had never heard. He said: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much." He said: So the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) covered their faces, sobbing. الشرح · explanation
قَطّ: أبدًا. خَنِين: هُوَ بُكَاء مَعَ غُنَّةٍ وَانْتِشَاقِ الصَّوتِ مِنَ الأَنْفِ.
"ever (qatt)": at any time. "khanin (sobbing)": it is weeping accompanied by a nasal sound and the drawing-in of the voice through the nose.

التحريض على كثرة البكاء خوفًا من عقاب الله، والزجر عن كثرة الضحك، لأنّه يؤدّي إلى الغفلة وقسوة القلب. بيان حال الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم من التأثّر بالموعظة وبكائهم خشيةً من الله تعالى، والحثّ على الاقتداء بهم في هذا.
Urging frequent weeping out of fear of Allah's punishment, and rebuking excessive laughter, because it leads to heedlessness and hardness of the heart. A depiction of the state of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in how they were affected by the admonition and wept out of fear of Allah, the Exalted, and an encouragement to follow their example in this.
