Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Abu Bakr said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Let us go to Umm Ayman and visit her, just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her. When they reached her, she wept. They said to her: What makes you weep? Do you not know that what is with Allah the Exalted is better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: I am not weeping because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); rather I weep because the revelation from heaven has now ceased. Thus she stirred them to weeping, and they both began to weep along with her. Reported by Muslim.
Umm Ayman: a freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who nursed and cared for him until he grew up. She was from Abyssinia; he freed her when he married Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and gave her in marriage to Zayd ibn Harithah, so she was the mother of Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with both of them). She died a short while after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Thus she stirred them to weeping: that is, she affected them and moved them, so that she brought them to tears.
