عن ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: لَمَّا اشْتَدَّ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وَجَعُهُ، قِيلَ لَهُ في الصَّلاَةِ، فقال: «مُرُوا أَبا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بالنَّاسِ» فقالتْ عائشةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقيقٌ، إِذا قَرَأَ القُرآنَ غَلَبَهُ البُكاءُ، فقال: «مُرُوهُ فَلْيُصَلِّ». وفي روايةٍ عن عائشةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قالَتْ: قلتُ: إِنَّ أَبا بَكْرٍ إِذا قَامَ مقامَكَ لَمْ يُسْمِعِ النَّاسَ مِنَ البُكَاءِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported: When the pain of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) grew severe, he was asked about the prayer, and he said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man; when he recites the Qur'an, weeping overcomes him. He said: "Tell him to lead the prayer." In another narration from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: I said: When Abu Bakr stands in your place, he will not be able to make the people hear, because of his weeping. اشتد: قوي وعظم. قيل له في الصلاة: أي من يقيمها للقوم ويؤم بهم فيها؟ رقيق: أي قلبه رقيق. قرأ: أي القرآن الكريم. مقامك: أي إمامًا بالناس.
Grew severe: became strong and great. He was asked about the prayer: that is, who would establish it for the people and lead them in it. Tender-hearted: that is, his heart is soft. He recites: that is, the Noble Qur'an. Your place: that is, as imam leading the people.

بيان فضيلة أبي بكر رضي الله عنه وما كان عليه من خشية الله عز وجل. استحباب رقة القلب والبكاء عند تلاوة القرآن. أخذ الصحابة من هذا الحديث أفضليّة الصدِّيق على باقي الصحابة وأحقّيّته بالخلافة بعد وفاة النبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم، ولذا قال عمرُ رضي الله عنه رجل اختاره النبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم لديننا ألا نرضاه لدنيانا.

The Companions derived from this hadith the superiority of al-Siddiq over the rest of the Companions and his greater right to the caliphate after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); hence Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) chose for our religion, shall we not be content with him for our worldly affairs?
