Riyad Al Salihin

Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf reported that Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought some food while he was fasting, and he said: Mus'ab ibn Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, and he was better than I, yet nothing could be found to shroud him except a striped cloak; if his head was covered with it, his feet became exposed, and if his feet were covered with it, his head became exposed. Then there was spread out for us of the world what was spread out—or he said: we were given of the world what we were given—and we have feared that our good deeds may have been hastened for us. Then he began to weep until he left the food. Reported by al-Bukhari.

A striped cloak: a kind of garment worn by the Bedouins. Spread out: made ample, through the conquests and spoils of war that came about. Our good deeds have been hastened for us: we have been given the reward of our righteous deeds in this world, so that nothing remains stored up for us in the Hereafter.

The humility of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the perfection of their excellence, in that each of them would regard himself as the least of people; otherwise Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was among those given glad tidings of Paradise, and he was better than Mus'ab, especially since his wealth was a means of benefit to the Muslims (may Allah be pleased with them all). A warning against immersing oneself in the world, being preoccupied with it, falling short of one's duty because of it, and failing to thank the Bestower of blessings by neglecting the rights obligatory therein. The abundance of the world and its ampleness may be a hastening of the reward of the Hereafter.
